Athabaskan returned to her activity group and remained on station within the Persian Gulf till after the warfare ended. After Operation Desert Storm began in January 1991, the task group undertook escort duties for hospital ships and different weak naval vessels of the coalition. Unlike most ships of her size, Athabaskan might concurrently operate two massive CH-124 Sea King helicopters, which may search out mines for long durations.
