I’d love to take silymarin because my liver would really appreciate it, and I’ve taken it sometimes without problems, but, when I bought a really good water soluble silymarin (420mg softgels), I started to feel down and depressed.

It seems that it can really affect the serotonin pathway, take it into consideration.

Be careful if you have a history of calcium-oxalate stones. Milk thistle is extremely high in oxalate at 46 mgs per teaspoon or about 20%. There is about 6 mg of oxalate in 300 mg capsule.

I had a chalazion in upper eyelid. Chalazion is something like a small cyst and the eyelid was quite swollen. I had it for several weeks; as it didn’t shrink and gone by itself, I tried some drug in paste form; it didn’t work at all. The last days I tried dry milk thistle, that I made it like tea and put some milk thistle in compress (with some cotton). The chalazion reduced a lot, maybe has shrank about 50%.

Hello, I find the info on Milk Thistle fascinating, however I’m confused with which one you recommend, is it from the brand “Now”? I’m asking because I see magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide listed in the ingredients and you mention that you prefer not to have these included. In addition if I take it as a daily supplement, do I need to stop at 41 months and if so for how long before starting up again?

Rather than using supplements, what about using the seeds in smoothies – is there a lectin issue with these seeds? Just starting a lectin avoidant diet and want to keep my milk thistle in somehow….

My husband started using oral milk thistle tablets a week ago and already the pain from his liver has significantly subsided. – virtually disappeared. We are anxious to see how further effective this will be ie liver enzyme levels, as currently the levels are high and at a 75% loss of liver function. So, while we await bariatric surgery in the Fall, this could make a significant difference. Fingers crossed!
