The only question I have going forward is, what does a 60 milligrams look like? A teaspoon? half? A tablespoon? I will need to find this out. Thank you for the well written article!

I know Thunder God Vine very well for having Rheumatoid Arthritis and taking the safe version of it (medicinal Thunder God Vine). Physicians prescribe this normalized medicinal extracts in hospitals in China since around 30 years. The dosage is of 1 to 1,5mg/kg per day. The indications include a wide range of autoimmune disorders. I am taking it since September 2015. I am in a remission since April 2016 until this day June 2020. Medicinal Thunder God Vine is cheap and very safe. Thunder God Vine capsules and powder are not medicinal extracts and should not be taken by mouth because of liver and kidney toxicity.

I would like to find an ethyl acetate (EA) extract, as this would be less toxic than the powdered root. Some sellers on the web are even advertising powdered versions of the whole herb, which I understand can be lethal. Most sellers just buy the powdered root in bulk on Alibaba, and put it into capsules for resale. Others say that their extraction process is “proprietary.” That’s not informative, since water extraction still leads to a toxic product. I believe that an ethyl acetate extract is available in China, where it is popular, but does anyone know where I can get it here in the U.S?

Hi Lacey, you’re on the right track! Yes, the 20:1 extract should make the dosage lower for most people. I am hesitant to recommend a higher dosage at first, especially if you already have kidney problems. Higher doses (360mg/day compared to 180 mg/day) were associated with slightly higher RA improvements in one clinical study that used an ethanol/ethyl acetate extract over 20 weeks. 500mg caps would be a large amount. The best we can do is to approximately determine an effective, safe RA dosage based on that study and the quality and strength of commercially available extracts. With this in mind, I suggest you start with a lower dosage and slowly increase it if you don’t experience side effects. If only 200mg caps are available, you can start with those (1 cap/day). If you don’t have kidney problems, you could even try taking 400mg/day, which is indeed high. In that case, I suggest caution. Listen to your body, track your response and side effects. If you experience side effects, reduce the dosage or stop taking the supplement.
All the best,
Ana

Your last reply to me said keep the dose under 120mg/day of the 20:1 extract. Thundergodroot.com sells 20:1 caps at a much bigger dose than 120mg and the owner said she/he takes 200mg x2/day of the 20:1 extract. Web MD says for RA that dosages greater than 360mg/day were associated with clinical benefit in patients with RA. A self-hacked article says 60mg 3-6x/day if used as a stand alone treatment. I guess I’m assuming the 20:1 strength makes the dosage u mentioned a lot lower for most people? Wonder why 500mg caps are being sold at 20:1 and 10:1 strengths? Isn’t that a very large amount? I’m assuming by your dose recommendation that a dose less than 120mg/day of the 20:1 extract is an effective dose for RA.
Thank you for your replies and patience Ana.

Thanks, Lacey. Kidney or liver damage has been reported in about 6% of the cases. First of all, it’s recommended to keep the dosage under 120 mg/day. Start with a lower dose and carefully monitor your reaction. It would be best to consult a doctor if you plan to use it for kidney disease and/or take any prescription medications. Since oxidative stress from triptolide is involved in the damage, the safest way to reduce the likelihood of organ damage is with well-researched antioxidants like vitamin C, resveratrol, quercetin, and NRF2 boosters (such as sulforaphane). You don’t need to use all of them, any single one should offer you a degree of protection. You may want to read through our post about NRF2 as well: https://selfhacked.com/blog/about-nrf2-and-natural-ways-to-increase-it/. Hope this helps!

A few more questions please. One of the side effects is listed as kidney damage but also says that it helps kidneys? I see there a number of supplements that can be used to limit damage of Triptolide. Which herbs or supplements do u recommend?
Thank u for your time and patience.

Thanks, Lacey! 20:1 extracts are typical, although the studies often don’t specify the ratio (or the extract type varies). The higher the ratio, the more potent the extract. Capsulated extracts will usually state the quantity in mg as well. For example, 200 mg per capsule of the 20:1 extract. If the one you have is in powder form, this makes dosing a bit more difficult. You would need to measure the powder on a small scale to dose it precisely–200 mg of the powder for a 200mg dose.

I want to try Thunder God Vine. I have a 20:1 extract but the studies haven’t mentioned the concentration used in the studies, so the dose for 20:1 is confusing. Any ideas?
Thanks
